Tanzania continues to have high birth rates and one of the fastest growing populations in the world. At the current rate of growth, the population would double in size in about 25 years. The purpose of this document is to consider some of the implications of this rapid growth for the social and economic development of the country. It is divided into five sections: The Tanzanian Development Vision; Population Characteristics and Projections; Population, Economic Development, and Poverty Reduction; Impact of Rapid Population Growth on Social and Economic Development; and Policy Response. This booklet is based on analysis carried out using the RAPID model. A powerpoint presentation on its contents and a Swahili version of the booklet are also available on the Health Policy Initiative's website.
