DemProj
DemProj, contained in the Spectrum Suite, is one of the most widely used software models for making population projections. Researchers, planners, and policymakers can use the model findings to inform research activities, program planning, and policy development. Divided into three parts, this e-learning course provides (1) a review of the basic demographic concepts and measures of population and the processes that influence population growth, (2) step-by-step instructions in using DemProj to make population projections, and (3) a series of useful exercises and "quiz" questions to reinforce concepts.
Seminar on Policy Approaches to EQUITY in Health
The two-day seminar, "Policy Approaches to EQUITY in Health," is designed to assist stakeholders with developing a greater understanding of how to incorporate equity approaches in their country programs. The aim of the seminar is to share effective approaches and proven methodologies for addressing population and health in the context of poverty. Although the intended audience is technical staff working in health in USAID and USAID-supported projects, the presentations use concepts and explanations given in concise, non-technical language to allow for greater accessibility and ease of understanding. Gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health 101
Gender inequality hinders the achievement of family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) goals. Inequities among women and men increase vulnerabilities to ill-health by promoting high-risk behaviors, limiting open communication between partners, and decreasing access to health services and information. In response, the "Gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health 101" course is designed to introduce health policymakers, advocates, and program managers to gender issues and approaches for gender integration. The course explores gender issues as they affect individuals, families, and communities and introduces students to gender analysis. The course also describes the various steps for integrating gender throughout the program cycle. The course can be accessed through the Global Health e-Learning Center. Access is free, but you will need to set up a username and password. Gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health 101 Course Handout
HIV Stigma and Discrimination
The fear of stigma and discrimination negatively affects the ways in which individuals and families protect themselves and provide care for those affected by HIV and AIDS. It can make individuals reluctant to disclose their status or access HIV testing, treatment, and care. HIV-related stigma can impede governments from effectively addressing the epidemic, especially because the most-at-risk populations are often the most marginalized groups in society. These factors increasingly challenge efforts to stem the epidemic. The "HIV Stigma and Discrimination" course introduces key concepts, explores the impact of stigma and discrimination on behavior and HIV responses, and shares promising practices for addressing them. The course can be accessed through the Global Health e-Learning Center. Access is free, but you will need to set up a username and password. HIV Stigma and Discrimination Course Handout
What Difference Does Gender Make: An Advocacy Training
This presentation makes the case for gender integration in USAID health programming. It gives a broad overview of what is meant by “gender” and explains why gender integration makes a difference in reproductive health programming. The presentation discusses commitments that U.S. government agencies have made to gender and gender integration, and shares examples of programs that demonstrate how gender-integrated programming leads to health and gender results. Finally, the presentation shares tips and resources for getting started with gender integration.
Gender-based Violence: A Primer
This introduction to gender-based violence (GBV) focuses on intimate partner violence in the context of reproductive health. Workshop participants explore how GBV is defined, the types of violence it includes, violence that occurs through a woman's life cycle, and its impact on women's health. Participants also explore the myths and realities of GBV and why many women remain in violent relationships, as well as examine strategies to address GBV and how to apply these to their own projects.
Constructive Men's Engagement in Reproductive Health
The module focuses on gender-integrated programming that fosters constructive engagement of men and also provides capacity building on foundational gender and gender analysis concepts and tools. Through an exploration of men’s roles in family planning, sexuality, sexually transmitted infections, safe motherhood, and violence against women, participants analyze the social impact of the different RH experiences of men and women and identify how some types of men’s involvement perpetuate unequal power relationships.
Gender and Safe Motherhood
This module provides an overview of the impact gender can and does have on safe motherhood. Through case studies, participants will explore how gender roles and the balance of power in relationships impact safe motherhood, as well as the role of men in the pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum periods. Finally, gender assessment tools are examined and discussed in relation to participants’ own safe motherhood projects and/or programs.
